RAM 1500 Cabin Air Filter Location

2023 RAM 1500 Red Interior

Your RAM 1500 has two air filters. The one in the engine keeps the air cleaner by removing dust, pollen, and contaminants before it goes to the combustion chamber to make sure your pistons work as efficiently as possible. The other is connected to your air conditioner, and it filters the air that goes into your cabin for improved air quality as you drive along Ventura roads. The RAM 1500 air filter location allows it to keep your cabin free of dirt, dust, smoke, and even some allergens.

Find out how to change the RAM 1500 cabin filter and its location with our in-depth guide from the service team at Santa Barbara Chrysler Dodge Jeep® Ram FIAT®.

Where Is the Cabin Air Filter in the RAM 1500?

From 2016 onward, the RAM 1500 cabin air filter location is behind the glove compartment on the passenger’s side of the front seat. You won’t be able to see it readily, even if you open the glove box, because it’s nestled behind the back wall of the compartment.

You’ll need a little time (no more than an hour) of your weekend to change out the RAM 1500 cabin filter. If you’d rather enjoy more of your weekend, schedule a service appointment at Santa Barbara Chrysler Dodge Jeep® Ram FIAT®, and our service technicians near Oxnard can take care of it for you in very little time.

How to Change a RAM 1500 Cabin Air Filter

Ready to change the RAM 1500 cabin air filter yourself? Follow these steps to take care of this maintenance at home. You won’t need any specialized tools to find the RAM 1500 cabin air filter or to replace it.

  1. Open the glove box and empty it completely.
  2. Disconnect the damper cord linkage, which is located on the right side of the glove box.
  3. Lift the glove box slightly, then firmly pull the base of the linkage towards you until you hear it disengage. Allow the disconnected cord to retract.
  4. Compress the two support tabs on the glove box’s top corners with your thumbs. This will help the glove box disconnect from its housing.
  5. While compressing the tabs, pull on the glove box. This will let you see what’s behind it.
  6. Lower the glove box gently until the three hinge tabs at the bottom release. The glove box should be completely free to move now.
  7. Place the glove box out of the work area. You should be able to see the cabin air filter cover at this point.
  8. Press and release the two locking tabs located on each side of the cover of the cabin air filter. Pull the cover in an outward direction at the same time you do this. You can easily look at the air filter inside of its housing.
  9. Remove the old RAM 1500 cabin air filter.
  10. Inspect the cabin filter housing area for any dirt, dust, and debris. Remove any of these items before replacing the filter for best results.
  11. Slide the new air filter into the housing. Make sure the airflow arrows point in the right direction.
  12. Align the cover to the housing with the two mounting tabs. This allows for easy movement.
  13. Press the cover against the housing until you hear or feel the tabs lock in place.
  14. Align and insert the three lower glove box hinge tabs into the dash. You’ll be doing the reverse of the process you used to remove the glove box.
  15. Tilt the glove box upward and pull out the retracted damper cord. Hold the cord while relieving pressure from the two tabs on the back side of the glove box.
  16. Push the glove box upward until the tabs clip or lock back in place.
  17. Reinstall the glove box damper cord linkage.
  18. You’re done! Open and close the glove box door to make sure it works properly.

Pro tip: You might have a second set of hands to help you. One of you can tilt the glove box while the other pulls on the tabs.

How Do You Know When to Replace the RAM 1500 Cabin Air Filter?

Much like the engine air filter, the cabin air filter collects dust, pollen, and dirt as you drive along Goleta roads. The cabin air filter keeps these contaminants and smells out of your cabin, allowing you and your passengers to breathe easier. A dirty cabin air filter that needs to be replaced can drastically reduce the air quality inside your vehicle.

Notice these changes in your cabin’s air quality. Any of these signs can indicate you need a new cabin air filter for your RAM 1500:

  • Reduced airflow when the AC or heat is on
  • Unpleasant odors that linger in the cabin
  • Dust on surfaces almost all of the time

You should replace your cabin air filter whenever any of these signs occur. RAM recommends changing your cabin air filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles for the best air quality in your cabin, so expect to change it every two to three years depending on your driving habits.
